Notes for Delilah (Adelia) Colpitts
Since her parents settled in Middle Coverdale (near today’s city of Riverview) and since that house was still in the family two generations later, its is assumed that Adelia must have been born there. The Jones family bible gives year of birth as 1815 but gravestone suggests 1813.
Referred to as Delilah Colpitts on Internet postings80 and on her marriage certificate.8 Land transfer records for Abner and her show her name variously as Delily and Adelia. The Jones family bible18 and Elmwood cemetery state her as Adelia. Her ancestry was derived from this Internet source80 but definitely Delilah and Adelia are one and the same since since both sources (Internet postings and the Jones family bible) show the same marriage date to Abner Jones. She was probably named Delilah but known to all who knew her as Adelia.

A vague piece of family lore in Kathleen Givan’s family was that there existed a link to President Millard Fillmore of the United States. Research has managed to establish this remarkably tenuous link: Two of Adelia Colpitt’s siblings married Fillmores who were the half second cousins of President Fillmore. There’s not a drop of Fillmore blood in Adelia but it makes a good story!
