Notes for James DeWolfe & Hannah (Family)
The following marriage record from the New Brunswick Archives site creates some confusion:
Date: June 3 1886
County: Saint John
Place: Saint John
Newspaper: The Daily Telegraph
“m. Holy Trinity Church, Anerley, London, England, 2nd inst., by Rev. Thomas Scott, Vicar, James DeWolfe SPURR, Esq., Saint John, N.B. / Hannah ROBERTSON d/o James ROBERTSON, Esq., Moncton (West. Co.)”
51This suggests James DeWolfe Spurr married a Hannah Robertson instead of Hannah Bennett, but we know from various announcements regarding Hannah Bennett’s father John Bennett that his daughter was Mrs. James DeWolfe Spurr [cf: John Bennett 1805-1888]. Could Hannah have been a widow of James Robertson? As it turns out, there was indeed a James Robertson of Moncton who died in 1883 leaving a widow Hannah of precisely the right age to be Hannah Bennett, and son George. It seems most likely therefore that Hannah was married twice and the marriage announcement should have read “widow of” rather than “d/o”.
