“We regret to learn that James E. TRITES, formerly of the Railway office at St. John Station was drowned on July 30th in the steamer "Brother Jonathan" between San Francisco and Vancouver Island. Only 14 out of 300 passengers were saved. Young TRITE's body was washed ashore and was interred at Crescent City. The deceased was the eldest s/o John S. TRITES, Esq., Cashier of Westmorland Bank.”

“James E. TRITES, formerly Telegraph Operator and Clerk at the Railway Office, St. John Station was one of the 280 passengers who met a watery grave when the ill starred "Brother Jonathan", while on her passage from San Francisco to Victoria, struck a sunken rock near Crescent City and sunk. The remains of Mr. TRITES (whose father is Cashier of the Westmorland Bank) were interred in Crescent City.”
