Notes for James T. Hamilton
stone reads: “James Hamilton, a native of Ireland, born Dec. 11th, 1813, died Nov. 10th, 1881”58
Listed in the 1851 census as James Hamilton Jr., between age 30 and 40.155
Listed in the 1871 census as age 59 suggesting a year of birth of 1811. Listed in the 1881 census as age 65 which would suggest year of birth of 1816.101
The middle initial is “G” on the 1861 census. His middle initial is “T” in his wife’s obituary and other entries from the Berwick Register.154

From the Berwick Register April 20th, 1927: “Away back in 1850, the late Jimmie Hamilton, who had inherited a big slice of land here from his father, an Empire Loyalist, who in turn had received it from his King, started in and built a little coaster, of about fifty tons. That started the ship-building industry at Harbourville, and before two years had rolled around, practically every piece of available place of land near tide water was an embryo ship-yard.” Although this item is mistaken about how James Hamilton acquired the land it is an interesting reference to ship building of the time.
