Notes for James Hamilton
This is almost certainly the James Hamilton to whom John Givan sold the west wharf land in 1832, and it appears that he was John’s brother-in-law. He probably came from County Tyrone (as did John Givan) since his daughter Sarah Hamilton is said to have been born in County Tyrone in her son William Edgar Morris’ obituary.
From the Cornwallis Reformed Presbyterian Church minutes, June 25, 1859:
“In addition to those who appeared before the Session at its last meeting Mrs. A. Magee of Lower Cornwallis and Mr. and Mrs. James Hamilton of North Mountain were present to seek admission to the Church and after examination and satisfactory answers were admitted and received the right hand of fellowship.”
54The Hamiltons in these minutes are either James Sr. and Jane or James Jr. and Isabella. The Congregation membership list has both a ‘Mrs. James Hamilton’ and a ‘Mrs. Hamilton’ and for the latter the recorded date of death matches with Jane Allison’s. The Givans also were members of this congregation and ‘Mrs. John Givan’ is listed right below ‘Mrs. Hamilton’.
