Unable to write, he made this cross on the “Articles of Agreement” land settlement contract dated January 27, 1766 in Philadelphia. His name is written around the mark in the handwriting of witness John Hughes Jr., and thus the anglicised name of “Charles Jones” appears. To the right of each signature is a wax seal.
