Notes for Jno Burt
Forename John derived from his son John’s baptismal record.
124There appears to have likely been a line of Johns going back to the 16th century. Parish records show the following John Burts buried in the cemetery of St. Catherine’s:
John Burt Apr 22, 1605
John Burt Oct 16, 1620
John Burt Jan 31, 1713
John Burt Nov 12, 1766 (possibly this John Burt)
John Burt Dec 26, 1796 (John Burt Sr., son of this John Burt)
From British History online quoting from Pages 210-224 of “A History of the County of Somerset: Volume 3. Originally published by Victoria County History, London, 1974.“:
“The grant of the former priory lands to William Petre in 1539 included the site of the monastery and its immediate grounds, including the monks' graveyard. There is no mention of the monastic church, which was evidently demolished immediately. Surviving conventual buildings, including the gateway of the priory, were leased by Petre and his son as a farm-house to John Burt, who farmed some of the adjoining land for some fifty years until c. 1600.”300 One wonders if this could have been the John Burt who was buried in Apr 22, 1605 -- quite probably a direct ancestor of various lines of Montacute Burts including ours.
