Notes for Daniel Clark
Daniel Clark, 1732-1800, Irish born, fought in the French-Indian War, where he was a lieutenant in Major James Burd's company of the Third Battalion at Fort Augusta in 1756-57. He married Jane Hoops in 1758, was associated with his father-in-law in Carlisle in the provisioning business until he moved to Philadelphia in 1761. He tried the merchant life for a few years, went to west Florida in 1765 to look into the land grant awarded veterans of the French-Indian Wars, served as assistant to the governor in Mobile for a while, returned to Philadelphia in late 1768 or early 1769. He and Jane lived in Bucks County until he sold that estate in 1773 to move to Natchez territory. Back in Philadelphia in the early 1780s, Clark was agent for Robert Morris's tobacco contract, working in Virginia in 1783 and 1784. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Mississippi territory to manage his 5,000 acre land grant, where his many letters and relations with his nephew of the same name can be found in the Winthrop Sargent Papers in the Massachusetts Historical Society. Contrary to written accounts, Daniel Clark did not die a wealthy man. He was deeply in debt the last years of his life, living on an annuity arranged by his nephew. After Clark died on July 16, 1800 (not 1799 as some writers have it), his widow returned to Philadelphia, where she lived until her death in 1812.261
