Notes for Aaron Jones
Date : June 19, 1889
Newspaper : The Times, Westmorland
“Aaron JONES, who is one of the very oldest citizens of Moncton, lately took a drive through the western part of the town. Mr. Jones is 82 years old and a native of Moncton, having been born on the Salisbury road only six miles from town. In early youth he determined to be a merchant. In the year 1843 he moved to Moncton, built the first two-storey house ever erected in this town and started a general store. Tobacco, tea, sugar, flour, pork, etc. was his stock and Mr. Jones also sold a little of the 'ardent' by the way of a change. Then, he says, Main street was little better than a crooked cattle path and the land between Wesley and Vulcan streets, on which the store of R. Higman, Commercial block etc., are now situated, was fenced and potatoes, oats, etc. raised thereon. There was little prospect at that time of the 'Bend' ever being more than a country village, where rum drinking and fighting would be the principal occupations. Malcolm WILMOT was the leading magistrate. On one occasion he caused the governor to be arrested and fined for travelling through Moncton on horseback on the Lord's day. Thomas PRINCE, father of Rev. John PRINCE, was another leading citizen. Where the principal part of the town of Moncton is now, was a wilderness of alder bushes on which cattle, swine and geese fed undisturbed and the wild fowls built their nests. Mr. Jones raised a family and has sons and daughters living. (see original) - TIMES June 22 - A correspondent writes: The first two storey building ever erected in Moncton was built on King street in 1837 by a William ALLEN, shoemaker. The house referred to is now owned and occupied by Edward McCARTHY. The frame of this house was cut by Mr. McCarthy's father, who lived at Cook's Brook at the time referred to. TIMES, June 24 -The first two storey house erected in Moncton was built by Warren PERRIGO about 1827 or 1823; the second one by a Mr. SMITH in 1830, the third one by William ALLEN in 1837, the fourth one by my father in the year 1839 (signed) Wm L. PRINCE”51
