In the 1851 census, she is listed as “Martha A.”, an only child at that time of 3 months old, living with her parents.84 As unlikely as it seems, evidence suggests her parents then changed her name to Loretta and used the name Martha Ann for a later child. From then on in the 1871, 1881, 1901 and 1911 censuses, and in Sadie’s and Walter’s birth registrations, her first name is listed as Loretta Trites, with a birthday of Feb 24, 1851 which means she must be the same person as the Martha A. referred to in the 1851 census.
