William S. Colpitts’ parentage is currently unclear.
Some thought he was the son of John R. Colpitts and Seraphina Fillmore, but it has since been proven that their son was in fact a different William (William L. Colpitts who married neighbour Mary Jane Crossman).
However, it is quite possible that William S. was in fact the William “W” listed as the son of William Colpitts and Elizabeth Stiles in the 1851 census. William “W” is listed with his parents in the 1851 census in Elgin, Albert County, New Brunswick age 14, suggesting a birth year of 1837.
84 Although the 1901 census gives William S’s birth year as 1835, the 1861 census gives his age as 27, supporting a birth year of 1837 which matches young William “W” of 1851. Furthermore William S. lived out his life in the same parish and is of the same religion as William and Elizabeth.
Therefore, for now he is left in this grouping until further evidence can verify his parentage.
He’s listed with his wife and 10 children in Elgin Parish, Albert County, New Brunswick in 1881.
9He’s listed with his wife in the 1901 census in Elgin, Albert County.
5His wife Caroline is a widow in Elgin in 1911.
