Rufus was a half second cousin to Millard Fillmore, president of the United States. The great-grandparents of Rufus were John Fillmore (1702-1777) and his first wife Mary Spiller (1707-1733), while President Fillmore was the great-grandson of John and his second wife Dorcas Day (1717-1759).
