“Passing of Mrs. Oliver Jones At The Age of 83 Years
Was Native of Charlottetown and Had Resided in Moncton Some 65 Years
Mrs. Elizabeth J. Jones, widow of Oliver Jones, for many years one of Moncton’s leading citizens and prominent in all civic activities who died 28 years ago, passed away early Saturday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.W. Redmond, 87 John street, after a long illness.
Mrs. Jones was 83 years of age and had resided in Moncton for the last 65 years, having seen the city grow from a small village to its present proportions and taking an active role in many of the outstanding social and moral reform movements that have marked the period. She was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, daughter of the late Hon. George Beer, and moved to Moncton upon her marriage to Mr. Jones.
She was an active member of the Wesley Memorial Church, and though for some time past unable to attend, was a keenly interested follower of its activities. She was also a strong supporter of the W.C.T.U. and contributed to its success in many ways, as she did to the Pearl street Mission which that organization maintains.
Mrs. Jones is survived by 2 daughters, Mrs. C.W. Redmond, of St. John street; and Emily A. Trites of Sussex, N.B., who lately has been spending some time in the city; and 3 sons, Andrew H. and Middleton B. of this city and Gurney R. Jones of Vancouver, B.C.; and 1 brother Mr. Herbert Beer of Charlettetown; and a number of grandchildren.
The funeral will be held this Monday afternoon with service at the home, 87 John street at 2.30 o’clock, the cortege leaving for Elmwood where interment will be made in the family vault at 3 o’clock.”
