Notes for James Givan
We’re not sure if James Givan was William’s brother or not. Ham writes:
“There are several Kerrs that married Givans. It is not known if they are related.
The records of the Chipman Cemetery state: Our Foreparents, Hugh Kerr born in Antrim 1788 died at Cornwallis, 18 Nov. 1854 age 66 and his wife Elizabeth Givan died at Canning 16 Nov 1878 age 84 years; also her mother, Maretha MacMaster, wife of James Givan, died in Cornwallis, 12 June 1858, age 89 years.
This means Maretha [sic] was born 1769, and her husband was probably born the same time. This leads me to believe James is William Given’s brother. James probably died in Ireland, and his widow and two daughters moved to NS after he died.”12

In fact the actual stone reads: “Our Foreparents, Hugh Kerr born in Antrim 1788 died at Cornwallis, 18 Nov. 1854 Aged 66 Y’rs. ELIZABETH GIVAN His wife Died at Canning Nov 16 1878 Aged 84 Y’rs. Also Her Mother MARTHA MacMASTER wife of JA’S GIVAN. Died at Cornwallis, June 12 1858, Aged 89 Y’rs.”
