Notes for Hortensia (Hortense) Coluccio
Aunt Hortense relates the following story. In either 1927 or 1928 before she turned 5, she was very upset because her older sister Mary who was like a mother to her was getting married. In order to comfort her, her brother Albert went to the corner candy store and got her some candy but Hortense didn’t like it so Albert returned for ice cream. When he returned to the house he saw that the house was on fire and the fire department was alerted. The Elevated trains that ran above Utrecht Ave. had been blowing their whistles because they saw the smoke.
Hortense also recalls when she was a small child and her sister Mary got married. Because Mary was like a mother to her and would be moving out Hortense was crying at the wedding. As a result she was being looked after by the chauffeur of the wedding car when he got the news that gangster Frankie Yale had been shot by the police nearby. He drove there to check it out and despite telling Hortense not to look she saw the infamous mobster lying dead on the steps!
