“...the plague got a lot of them [the Gmelins], and even worse was the constant warfare in the 1600s. This region was hit hard by the 30 Years War and the ones following. The Gmelins were constantly fleeing the Imperial soldiers and Jeremias Sr. took his family over the river to Basel numerous times. Jeremias' aunt [Margarethe] was beaten to death by raiding soldiers.”
