Notes for Maria Christiana (Christina) Gmelin
Christina is listed on her father’s will in 1756 as one of his three daughters (and the order suggests she was the eldest), each receiving 80 pounds, and her amount is listed as being paid to “Jacob Treitts”, thus establishing the link between Gmelin and Treitz. The same source mentions her two children by her previous marriage. Her next sister was born in Dec, 1717 which forms the basis for the estimate of Christina’s birth year of 1716.106

Although widely referred to as “Elisina” she is clearly listed on the original 1766 list of settlers as “Christiana Trites”.110 As well she is listed on documents in the Westmorland County Registry in 1790 and 1791 as “Christina” and “Christiana”, in which Jacob and she deeded the eastern portion of the Trites land to her son-in-law Christian Steeves in 1791.90,116
